Continuing a trend established with my last album, I chose a jazz groove to drive the sound of my newest album, All of Me (March 2016). Backed by the Danny Green Trio on five tracks and Green at the piano on three more, I had the pleasure of singing lush ballads like “The Very Thought of You,” snapping my fingers on up-tempo standards like “I Get a Kick Out of You” and crooning on an R&B-tinged “Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me.” Peter Sprague, who acted as studio and mixing engineer, added amazing guitar work on four of these eight tracks.
Working with these guys was a dream come true and the resulting sound, I think, is exquisite. Especially exciting were Green’s sophisticated arrangements on several of the tracks, including one of my two original songs on the album, “You Must Have Known I Loved You.” The precision and inventiveness that Danny and the guys pull off is astounding. Justin Grinnell (acoustic bass) and Julien Cantelm (drums) round out Danny’s Trio — it’s no wonder they have become the toast of the town in music circles.
Adding variety to the album, five more songs push beyond jazz and include a couple of my favorite Sondheim tunes, Leonard Cohen’s iconic “Famous Blue Raincoat,” the sentimental Broadway favorite, “Old Friend,” and another original, “A Song for Kim.” This original song is a tribute to my sweet, recently deceased friend, Km George. On these five songs, I am accompanied by my dear friend and longtime musical partner, pianist Drew Massicot.
